Hip Spacers

Hip spacers are temporary implant devices used during two-stage revision Total Hip Replacement procedures to treat deep joint infections while preserving hip function and anatomical alignment. Made from PMMA bone cement—commonly mixed with antibiotics such as vancomycin, gentamicin, or tobramycin—hip spacers deliver high local antibiotic concentrations directly to the infected joint, helping eradicate bacteria and control biofilm formation on surrounding bone and soft tissues. They maintain leg length, joint space, and soft-tissue tension, preventing contractures and reducing pain during the infection-clearing phase.
Hip spacers are available in static and articulating designs. Static spacers offer stable immobilization for cases with severe bone loss or poor soft-tissue support, while articulating spacers allow controlled mobility, enabling patients to walk with partial weight-bearing and maintain better postoperative function.
